The French verb **accoster** comes from Old French *acoster*, which in turn derives from Late Latin *acostare* “to put at the side, to approach.” This Latin form is built from the prefix *ad-* “to” and *costa* “side, rib” (the notion of sitting beside someone). Originally it meant “to sit beside or approach someone for a favour,” and over time it acquired the sense of “to nag or harass” by extension.
