Etymology
**Etymology of French *barder* (verb)**
*Barder* (to arm, to equip with armor) comes from Old French *barder*, itself derived from the noun *bard* meaning a piece of armor or shield. The noun *bard* is from late Latin *bardus*, a borrowing from a Germanic root *bard‑* “shield, covering” (cf. Old High German *bard*). The verb survived into Modern French to describe the outfitting of a horse or soldier with barding and later acquired a figurative sense of putting on a front.
