"Bien-aimé" is a compound of *bien* (from Latin *bene*, “well, good”) and *aimé*, the past participle of *aimer* (from Latin *amare*, “to love”, ultimately PIE *am‑ “to love”). The adjective originally described someone who is “well‑loved” and entered French in the Middle Ages, where it began to be used substantively to mean a beloved person (often a spouse or close relative). The noun form solidified in Early Modern French, especially in literary and devotional contexts.
