Etymology
Braguette, the French noun for a trouser fly, is a diminutive of the older word **bragu** (also seen as *braguon*), first recorded in the 16th‑17th centuries as a term for a skirt or short garment.
Bragu itself is traced back to Old French *bragu*/*braque*, from the Latin *bracchium* “arm”, reflecting the garment’s folding or bending shape.
The word entered common use in the early modern period and, by the 18th century, had specialized to designate the front opening of trousers.
