**bâiller** – “to yawn” – comes from Old French *bailier*, itself derived from a Germanic root *balja‑ “to gape, yawn.” The word entered French via Late Latin and has kept the sense of opening the mouth wide; the loss of the medial *l* in Middle French produced the modern form with the circumflex (bâ-).
