Etymology
The French noun **certitude** comes directly from the Latin *certitudo*, itself formed from *certus* (“certain, sure”) plus the abstract‑forming suffix *‑tudo* (‑tude). It entered Old French in the 12th–13th centuries as *certitude* and has kept the same spelling and meaning to the present day, simply preserving the Latin root and suffix in modern French.
