Etymology
*Civiliser* is formed in French from the adjective *civil* (from Latin *civilis*, “of a citizen”, itself from *civis* “citizen”) plus the verb‑forming suffix **‑iser**, borrowed from Latin *‑izare* (as in *moderniser*). The noun *civil* entered French in the 15th c., and the verb *civiliser* appeared in the 17th c., originally meaning “to make civil, to bring into a state of civilization.” The sense has since broadened to “to bring into a more advanced or cultured condition.”
