Etymology
**Condamnation** comes from the Latin *condemnatio*, itself formed from *con-* (“together, with”) + *damnatio* (“the act of damning”) derived from *damnare* (“to damn, condemn”). It entered Old French in the 13th century as *condamnacion* and, by the 16th century, had stabilized into the modern spelling *condamnation*, retaining its original sense of a judicial judgment of condemnation.
