Etymology
The noun **couteau** comes from Old French *couteul* or *coutel*, itself a borrowing of the Latin diminutive *cutellum* “small knife, dagger.” *Cutellum* is derived from the Latin root *cuto* (verb “to cut”) and originally referred to a small cutting tool. Over time, the final *-l* of *coutel* was dropped and the spelling shifted to *couteau* with the usual French *-au* ending, preserving the meaning of a handheld knife.
