Etymology
The adjective **délicieux** comes from Old French *delice* “pleasure, delight”, itself borrowed from Latin *deliciae* (plural of *delicium* “delicacy, pleasure”), which derives from the verb *delicere* “to please, delight”. In French the noun *delice* was suffixed with the adjective‑forming ending *‑eux* to create *délicieux*, originally meaning “delightful, subtle”. By the 18th century the term had shifted in everyday use to denote food that gives pleasure to the palate, i.e. “delicious”.
