Etymology
The French noun **eunuque** comes from the Middle French *eunuque*, borrowed directly from the Latin *eunuchus*, which in turn derives from the Greek *εὐνοῦχος* (eunoukhos). The Greek term literally means “one who has lost male potency,” from *eu-* “good” + *noun* (related to *nukos*, “male organ”). The word entered French in the 14th c. and retained its meaning as a castrated male servant or court official.
