Etymology
**Faillite** (noun) comes from Old French *faillite*, itself derived from the Late Latin *fallītia* “deceit, fraud,” which is built on *fallere* “to deceive, to fail.” The term entered French in the 15th c. with a general sense of failure or ruin and was later specialized in the 16th c. to denote financial insolvency (bankruptcy). It is cognate with English *failure* and Italian *fallimento*, all tracing back to the same Latin root.
