Etymology
French *grotte* (“cave”) comes from Latin *grotta*, which itself was borrowed from the Greek γρῶτος “hollow, cavity”. The term entered Old French in the 12th century as *grotte*, preserving the original sense of an underground chamber. Its spelling and meaning have remained essentially unchanged since then.
