The verb *hisser* (“to hoist”) comes from Old French *hisser*, itself borrowed from Late Latin *haesere* “to fasten, attach.”
*Haesere* is built on the Latin stem *haes‑* (from the Proto‑Indo‑European root *h₁és‑ “to hold”), and the word’s sense shifted from “to secure or tie” to “to lift or raise, especially with a rope or crane.”
During the Middle French period the vowel *ae* was fronted to *i*, producing the modern spelling and pronunciation *hisser*.
