Etymology
Intolérable is a direct descendant of the Latin *intolerabilis*, literally “not tolerable,” formed from the prefix *in-* (negation) + *tolerabilis* (“tolerable”), itself derived from *tolerare* “to endure.” It entered Old French as *intolérable* in the 12th–13th centuries, preserving the negative sense of something that cannot be endured. The spelling and meaning have remained essentially unchanged into Modern French, with the *in-* prefix still marking negation.
