Etymology
The French possessive “leurs” descends from Old French *leur* (singular) and *leurs* (plural), which in turn comes from the Latin genitive plural *earum* (the feminine form of *eorum*, “their”). The Latin *earum* was the feminine genitive of the demonstrative pronoun *ea* (“they”), and the word entered French through the medieval Latin *leur* via phonetic changes (the Latin *ea* becoming *le-* and the final *um* dropping). In Old French the form was originally singular (*leur*) and the plural *leurs* appeared later; modern French keeps the plural marker even when the antecedent is singular.
