Etymology
**magistral** (adj.) comes from Old French *magistral*, itself borrowed from the Latin *magistrālis*, an adjective formed from *magister* ‘master, teacher’ with the suffix *‑alis* ‘pertaining to’. The Latin form appeared in medieval Latin as a descriptor for something characteristic of a magistrate or of a master’s skill, and the sense of “excellent, masterly” entered French by the 14th century, retaining both the original meaning and the extended figurative sense of superior quality.
