Etymology
The French noun *mas* (a farmhouse in the southwest) comes from Old Occitan *mas*, which in turn is derived from the Latin *mansus* – the past participle of *manere* “to stay, remain.” The word originally meant “dwelling” or “abode,” and it was borrowed into French as a regional term for a country house or farmstead. The form survived the shift from Latin to Occitan and was incorporated into French vocabulary in the early Middle Ages.
