Etymology
**Meute** (n.) – *a pack of dogs, a mob*
Originates in Old French *meute* (12th c.), itself borrowed from a Germanic source *meuta* (cognate with German *Meute* “pack of dogs” and Dutch *meute*). The root is the Proto‑Germanic *maht-/*mahtiz, meaning “power, strength”, which came to denote a group that moves together. The word kept its original animal sense into modern French and later extended metaphorically to any large, often unruly group of people.
