Etymology
"Refusé" (noun) comes from the past participle of the verb **refuser**, which entered French from Old French *refuser* (c. 12th c.). That verb itself derives from Latin *refutare*, “to refute, reject”, from *re-* “back, again” + *futare* (cf. *futura* “future”), originally meaning “to speak against, to deny”. The noun *refusé* thus literally means “the one who has been rejected” and has been used in modern French to denote a person (often an immigrant or asylum‑seeker) who has been denied admission.
