Etymology
The French noun *religion* comes directly from Latin *religatio*, the act of “binding back” or “re‑binding.” The Latin verb *religare* is built from *re-* “again” + *lig‑* “to bind, tie” (from the PIE root *leg‑ “to bind”). The word entered Middle French as *relijion* in the 13th c., preserving the original sense of a binding or binding‑keeping practice before acquiring its modern meaning of a system of faith.
