The French adjective *secondaire* comes from Latin *secundarius*, “secondary, following in order,” itself derived from *secundus* “second.” *Secundus* is related to *sequi* “to follow,” indicating something that comes after the first. In French the word entered in the 17th century with the suffix *‑aire*, and later a verb form (*se secondaire*) appeared in the 20th century, literally “to act in a secondary manner.”
