Etymology
Sillonner comes from Old French *sillonner* (to make furrows), itself built on the noun *sillon* meaning “furrow.” *Sillon* derives from Latin *sulcus* (a furrow), which in turn comes from the PIE root *sulk-*/*sul- “to dig, to scour.” The verb was formed in the Middle Ages by adding the French verbal suffix –ner to the noun, preserving its literal sense of creating furrows and later extending metaphorically.
