The adjective **soif** comes from Old French *soif* (thirsty), which in turn is derived from Latin *sōs* “thirst, desire.” That Latin noun goes back to the Proto‑Indo‑European root *sʰew̑-/*sʰȗ- “to taste, desire, thirst,” from which various Romance words for “thirst” are built. The word kept its original sense in French, still used to describe someone who is very thirsty or, figuratively, who has a strong desire.
