Etymology
**Stimuler** comes from the Late Latin *stimulari* “to spur on, provoke,” which in turn is derived from the noun *stimulus* “a spur, a provocation.” That noun is linked to the Greek *stēma* “spur,” from the verb *stēma* meaning “to press, urge.” The French verb entered the language in the Middle Ages with its original sense of urging or exciting action, and its spelling has remained stable since.
