Etymology
The noun *tissu* comes from Old French *tissu*, itself derived from Late Latin *tissu* (plural of *textus* “fabric, weaving”).
*Textus* is from the Latin verb *texere* “to weave”, which in turn traces back to the Proto‑Indo‑European root *teik-/*teh- meaning “to weave, to bind”.
In medieval French *tissu* originally referred to the woven part of cloth, and over time it broadened to denote any material formed by interlacing threads or fibers.
