**Tract** (noun) is a loanword from English, which in turn comes from the Latin *trāctus*, the past participle of *trāhĕre* “to draw, to pull.” In Middle French the term *tract* was used for a written tract or pamphlet, reflecting the sense of something “drawn out.” Its origin is therefore the same as that of French *tirer* (from Latin *tirēre*), both conveying the idea of pulling or drawing.
