The French noun *tribune* comes from the Latin *tribūneum* “raised platform for a speaker,” itself derived from *tribūnus*, the title of a Roman magistrate who stood on such a platform. Borrowed into Old French in the 13th c., the word originally meant a literal stage or podium and later expanded metaphorically to refer to the place where people cast ballots, giving us the modern sense of a voting booth.
